The sand timer is called an hourglass. The first record of the sand timer dates back to 1345 where there is an order from a clerk on a ship for 16 hour glasses. Interestingly though hourglasses were not always used with sand. Powdered marble or pulverised and burnt egg shells were used instead.
How to make a sand timer
In order to make a home made sand timer (hourglass) you will need a few items.
Most importantly of these items is 2 bottles of equal size.
The idea is that you fill one of the bottles with around a quarter volume of sand.
The empty bottle is then taped around the mouth of the bottle that has the sand in it.
Thats it!

How much sand is needed for sand timer
How much sand needed for a sand timer depends on the bottles that you are using and how much time you wish to measure. For traditional hourglasses for an hour long pour of sand around 8-12 ounces is required.
How to make a 1-minute sand timer
The best way to make a 1 minute sand timer is to have lots of sand, lots of bottles and a stop watch.
If your using standard plastic bottles you can experiment with them and see which ones give you the best pour of sand. You might find that some bottles give a better pour than others!
Once you have selected a bottle you like fill it with sand, turn upside down and start the stopwatch.
If the stop watch reaches 1 minute and there is still sand left in the top of the hourglass, remove this excess sand , making sure to keep the minute’s worth of sand in the bottom vessel of the hourglass.
How to make a 15-minute sand timer
To make a 15-minute timer repeat the same process as above except be careful when selecting a bottle that you have one big enough with a neck that will pour the sand slowle.
